Justice has been finally served for Joanna Demafelis, a 29-year-old Filipino maid who was brutally tortured in Kuwait and whose remains were found inside a freezer at her employers’ home.



Her employers, Lebanese Nader Essam Assaf and his wife, Syrian Mona Hassoun, were found guilty of abusing and murdering Joanna Demafelis. Kuwait court sentenced the murderers to death by hanging following their gruesome misdeed.



The couple masqueraded their murder by locking their apartment and telling the authorities that Demafelis ran away before they fled from Kuwait.



The couple was reported to be found in Damascus, Syria after Interpol’s manhunt. Hassoun remained detained in Damascus, while her husband, Assaf, was surrendered to the Lebanese authorities.



Sarah Arriola, the Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs, is expected to discuss the conditions of an estimated 252,000 Overseas Filipino workers in Kuwait, including labor law violations, with Kuwaiti officials.
